Education

The Grinnell-Newburg School District consists of 219 square miles including the communities of Grinnell, Newburg, and Oakland Acres.  Total district population is about 11,500 people with 1,850 students in prekindergarten through grade 12.  Eleven bus routes serve the rural areas of northwest Poweshiek County and eastern Jasper County.

The philosophy of the district is to establish a school-wide educational environment which provides the best possible learning program for each and every student, each and everyday.  The elementary grades of PreK-4 are served by two primary buildings (K-2) and one intermediate grade building (3-4).

The Middle School includes grades 5-8 with the High School serving grades 9-12.  The seven member Board of Education, the 170 professional staff, and 130 support staff strive to implement the philosophy during the 180 days of classes.  There is a committed interest in continued growth and improvement for all persons supported by collaborative meetings for staff and opportunities for professional development.

Grinnell College is one of America's foremost liberal arts colleges with over 1400 students enrolled.  It hosts a diversity of people and perspectives on a residential campus that promotes close interactions and respect for individuals.  Grinnell students and graduates are characterized by their determination to make a difference in the world and in their communities.

Iowa Valley Community College opened the first "Grinnell Center" in a dowtown storefront on Broad Street in 1993.  Due to increased enrollments and requests for services, the District purchased the former Food 4 Less grocery store and remodeled the building and opened Iowa Valley Grinnell at 123 6th Avenue W. in January, 2002.

Iowa Valley Grinnell is a satellite center, offering MCC and ECC college credit classes and IVCE non-credit programs and services to area residents.  There are about 250 students enrolled in college credit courses.

Health

Grinnell Regional Medical Center provides hospital care for the Grinnell area and beyond.  Over a dozen medical practices provide access to internists, specialists, surgeons, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, psychologists, dentists, chiropractors, podiatrists, and massage therapists.  The nearby University of Iowa Hospital is one of the midwest's finest teaching hospitals.

Local Government

The City of Grinnell provides most local government functions, including water utilities.  The city operates on a council-manager system with an elected mayor.  The Poweshiek County seat is Montezuma, Iowa, about 21 miles southeast of Grinnell.
