Grinnell's theme of "Jewel of the Prairie" extends to the business community as well. Unlike many rural towns, where a single major business shift can dramatically impact the entire economic structure; Grinnell remains diverse and solid. In the past decade, only one employer of 50+ employees has closed, while more than 25 new businesses have been started. The outskirts of the town hosts major industry leaders such as Jeld Wen, Monsanto, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance, EPC, HW Brand and ASI. Industrial enterprises, located in the Industrial Parks on Highways 146 and 6, have experienced some of the highest productivity numbers per employee in the country.
